Gender and Identity Representation through Danielle Steel’s Book Covers by Decade

Danielle Steel, a prolific romance author and the bestselling living novelist, knows her audience well: a loyal set of middle-class, middle-aged women looking for a summer read. Her strong, socialite protagonists overcome adversity while finding true love and living the life any middle-class woman would long for. Yet, as expectations for women changed during the Steel's career, romance book cover marketing endured its own evolution to meet the desires of its target audience. Having observed romance genre stereotypes and greater female sexualization in other forms of media, this study will determine if the pattern for increasing sexualization holds true for Steel’s novels as well.
